Pricing by the truck-load, the item and the ton
Junk removal is priced by volume, so the invoice has to say what a full load is before a fraction means anything. Put your full-load rate in the price column and the fraction in the quantity column — 0.75 for three-quarters of a 16-yard trailer — because the quantity field carries three decimal places; or write the fraction into the description and price that line as a whole. Either way, name the truck or trailer size and what came out: "three-quarter load — garage and shed clear-out" tells the customer far more than "junk removal".
Disposal is where the arguments happen, so pass it through visibly. Put the scale weight in the quantity column and the transfer station's per-ton gate rate in the price column, and the customer can match the line straight to the ticket. Items the facility charges extra for — mattresses, tires, TVs and monitors, appliances with refrigerant — get one line each with a count, since there is no way to attach a surcharge to an existing line. Labor beyond what the load price includes, such as a third-floor carry-down or a long push from the back of a lot, goes on its own hourly line.
The notes field carries the job address, the transfer station ticket number, your hauler or business registration, and a property manager's PO, because none of those have a field of their own. It is also where you record what you would not take — paint, solvents, propane, anything with fuel still in it — and where usable items ended up, which matters to landlords and estate clients. If scrap metal earned a credit or a repeat account gets a percentage off, use the single discount field and say in the notes which it is. On tax, the label may need changing as much as the rate: Washington, for one, taxes solid waste collection under a separate 3.6% refuse tax rather than retail sales tax, and the tax label here is an editable field. How do I invoice a half load?
Put your full-load price in the rate column and 0.5 in the quantity column, since the quantity field carries three decimals — or write "half load" into the description and price that line as a whole. Say what a full load is in the description so the fraction has a reference point.
Should landfill and transfer station fees be a separate line?
Yes. There is no fee or shipping field, so disposal goes in as a line item with the weight in the quantity column and the gate rate in the price column, which lets the customer check it against the scale ticket instead of taking your word for it.
How do I charge for mattresses, tires and fridges?
One line per item type with the count in the quantity column, at the per-piece fee your facility charges plus your handling. Per-line surcharges are not possible here, so a separate line is both the workaround and the clearer way to bill it.
Is junk removal subject to sales tax?
