Why a Hong Kong invoice has no tax line

Hong Kong doesn't charge VAT, GST, or any sales tax — and that's still the case in 2026 — so a Hong Kong invoice is about as simple as invoices get. There's nothing to add on top of your prices and nothing to calculate: pick HKD as the currency and leave the tax rate empty, so no tax line appears on the PDF at all.

A clean Hong Kong invoice just needs your details, the client's, a unique invoice number, the issue date and a due date, and your charges itemised in Hong Kong dollars. It's common to show your Business Registration (BR) number under your business name — add it on a line in the address block, for example 'BR 12345678-000', so clients and their accountants can match the invoice to your registration.

Enter each service or product as its own line item with a description, quantity and rate — quantities take decimals, so 7.5 hours works fine. If you're offering a discount, apply the single discount to the subtotal; there's no tax sitting on top of it to complicate things. Use the notes field for your payment terms, bank or FPS transfer details, or a purchase-order number the client asked you to quote.

Every charge is per unit, and nothing is taxed

A Hong Kong freight forwarder invoicing a trading company for two containers to Rotterdam. Everything is priced per unit — per container for the ocean freight and terminal handling, per cubic metre for warehouse work, and a flat fee per document — so the client can reconcile the invoice line by line against the shipping paperwork. There is no tax to work out: the tax rate stays empty, so the PDF runs straight from the itemised charges to the amount due.

Charges are itemised per container, per cubic metre and per document, and nothing is added on top because Hong Kong levies no sales tax.

No VAT, but plenty still to get right

  • No tax line at all

Leave the tax rate empty — Hong Kong has no VAT, GST or sales tax, so the invoice should show your charges and nothing stacked on top of them.

  • Your BR number

Add 'BR 12345678-000' on a line under your company name in the address block; it isn't compulsory on an invoice, but Hong Kong clients and auditors expect to see it.

  • The job or shipment reference

There's no purchase-order field, so put the client's order number, container number or house B/L into the line item description or the notes so accounts payable can match it.

  • Charges priced per unit

Enter per-container, per-CBM or per-document charges as separate lines with the count in the quantity box rather than lumping everything into one 'services rendered' row.

  • FPS or bank details

Hong Kong clients pay by FPS, cheque or bank transfer, so put your FPS ID or HSBC/BOC account number and your payment terms in the notes field.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to charge tax on a Hong Kong invoice?

No. Hong Kong has no VAT, GST, or sales tax as of 2026, so you invoice your prices as they are — leave the tax rate empty and no tax line shows on the PDF. If you're billing clients overseas, their country's rules may differ, so check with an accountant.

Where do I put my Business Registration (BR) number?

Add it on a line under your business name in the address block, such as 'BR 12345678-000'. It isn't required on every invoice, but showing your BR number is common in Hong Kong and helps clients reconcile payments against their own records.

What does a standard Hong Kong invoice need to show?

Your business details, the client's details, a unique invoice number, the issue and due dates, and your charges itemised in Hong Kong dollars. The generator shows amounts in HKD with two decimal places, and since there's no local sales tax, there's no tax section to fill in.

Can I bill a Mainland China or overseas client in another currency?

Yes — switch the currency picker from HKD to CNY, USD, or any of the 20 currencies before you download. Everything else on the invoice stays the same; just confirm which currency your client expects to settle in.
