Invoicing a towing job
Split the tow into the lines that make up your rate sheet. A hook or base fee — the flat charge for the call and the first stretch of the tow — goes on its own line at quantity 1. Mileage is separate: put the loaded miles in the quantity column and your per-mile rate as the rate, so 18 miles at $4.50 calculates itself. Extra recovery work each gets its own line too — winching out of a ditch, dollies for a seized axle, a second operator, or an after-hours or holiday surcharge — because a driver or their insurer questions a lumped-together total far more than four clearly named charges.
If you're holding the vehicle, bill storage as its own line with the number of days in the quantity column and your daily rate as the rate — 3 days of outdoor storage at your posted rate. Identify the vehicle on the invoice: year, make, model, license plate, and VIN fit on a line under the customer's name in the address block, or in the notes. Notes are also where the pickup and drop-off locations go, along with the date and time of the call and any dispatch or police reference for a nonconsensual or private-property tow.

Who you bill matters as much as what you bill
The vehicle, identified
Year, make, model and plate — VIN as well on a non-consent tow — go in the address block under the customer's name or in the notes, because a tow bill nobody can tie to a vehicle is hard to collect on.
Pickup, drop and time
Name the pickup location, the release location and the call time in the description of the hook line, along with the rotation call number if it came through police dispatch.
Hook fee apart from mileage
Charge the flat hook or base fee on one line and the towed miles on another, with the miles in the quantity column at your per-mile rate. Recovery work — winching, uprighting, extra time on scene — goes on a third line in whatever increment your tariff uses.
